Warisan Resort, Kuala Berang, Terengganu

Warisan Resort is a resort that portrays staying in the Terengganu traditional houses in the 19th century. Located on  a 1.5 acre land in Kampong Pauh, 5km from Kuala Berang (on the way to Jenagor),  I consider this resort very unique.

There are 4 wooden houses (more are coming) arranged in a traditional Malay village of yesteryears. Each house has staircases and veranda. The room is very simple. The hall has no walls. It is connected to the veranda next to the staircases. The space under the house is used as recreation area. It remind me of my grand father's house. This give me some nostalgic feeling of the house. The TV is fixed at the wall at the open air hall.

The house wall has floral or motif design used as aesthetic and ventilation.

The open air hall and veranda, a typical Malay traditional house. On the left is the room or living quarter. The kitchen is at the back.

At the base of the staircase, there is a big tempayan with water. This tempayan water is used to wash your feet before you enter the house. You can not enter the house with shoes or slippers on. There is a big well behind the house. Those days, they depend on the ground water for living and the bath area was not surrounded or covered with shelter. Here bath area has  shade and walls (which is made of bamboo) and the well lid is covered. I was very excited to learn all these.

The large tempayan on the right is to contain water either from rain water (rain harvest was practised long ago in Terengganu) or  from the well.

The houses are connected with a veranda. There is a small wood carving workshop behind this house.

In the court yard, there are a  few timber buildings such as surau, communal eating place and landscape park with a small water pond. The eating area is right beside the landscape area.  I found the total environment here is interesting.

Staying here can bring back your memory or nostalgia. This is so especially for migrant Terengganu citizen and their families. It is also a learning experience for new generation who do not understand why such a house was design and built. For foreigner, staying here means you are experiencing living in Terengganu some 150 years ago. I consider this building a green building too.

Pok Ton agreed to be photographed by me.

Pok Ton (the owner) told me  he charged RM60.00 per room a night. He also arrange food if there is a request. He can be contacted by this number 012-922 3450. Happy travelling.
